This past weekend Eric and I went to our friends' TranSylvania Halloween party that they threw as a fundraiser for the Sylvania Arts Commission. It was held in a two-story barn in Michigan. The party was full of costumes, short horror films by local artists, a live performance by Jack & the Bear, and lots of food from a bunch of trendy local restaurants (Fowl and Fodder, Element 112, etc.) It was an awesome event.
Since we had to wear a costume I decided to take charge and create a DIY Moonrise Kingdom costume for us. One of the things that Suzy wears in the film is saddle shoes... unfortunately these are expensive so I decided to find a DIY version on Pinterest and modify them to my liking. Besides my shoe DIY - I sewed some patches on Eric's costume and the rest we found online, already owned, or bought from goodwill. Below is how I made $50+ saddle shoes out of $16 ones.
Supplies you'll need -
(purchased at Target + Hobby Lobby)
1 pair of women's white canvas shoes
1 bottle of black fabric paint
1-3 brushes (having a small, medium, and large size is helpful!)
1 small disposable container or plate to put the paint on
** Don't forget something to lay the shoes on so you don't get paint all over
- Remove the shoe strings until the paint is fully dry
- Place shoes on paper and begin painting
** The shoe itself has some different lines on it that you can use as a guide for the paint. I stayed
inside of them to make it look neat. There is really no trick to this DIY, it's all about a steady handand preference.
Xx,
A
